2024 Lexus GX: Over the Trail, No Longer Over the Hill

The Lexus GX gets a much-needed redesign for the 2024 model year, its first meaningful update in more than a decade. It shares a platform with its larger LX sibling — also sold as the less luxurious Toyota Land Cruiser in non-U.S. markets — and gets a new, significantly more powerful powertrain, updated suspension, rugged styling and more. The GX will also be the first Lexus to wear the Overtrail badge, adding more off-road equipment and capabilities to the big SUV.The old GX was a sort of odd duck in the styling department, with a mishmash of looks and proportions borrowed from the global Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus’ distinctive big-grille styling. The new GX is aggressively boxy, with a flatter spindle grille design. It’s wider and longer than the outgoing model, and it has a longer wheelbase, too. The cabin sits very upright, with a low beltline and pushed-back A-pillars aimed at improving outward visibility. Overtrail variants are even wider and come with beefy 33-inch all-terrain tires and trim-specific exterior color combinations.
